After a month of having Roman home, Brent and I were walking zombies. Not because Roman was up all night, but because we were constantly getting up and checking on him. Every little noise Roman made, Brent or I would jump up in a panic. When Roman was around 3 months old, Brent was really wanting to move him into his own room. I knew it would help us get more sleep, but I was wary of the idea.
For Mother’s Day Brent gave me a fantastic present in the Owlet Smart Sock 2 in hopes that I would feel more secure with Roman sleeping in his own room. Originally, I had the Owlet on my registry but I just couldn’t justify the price. After having Roman home a few weeks, I understood why people wanted it.
Peace of Mind!
The Owlet Smart Sock is a wireless oximeter that wraps around Roman’s foot and monitors his heart rate and oxygen levels. The sock is wirelessly connected to a base station, which we leave in our bedroom. The base notifies us if Roman’s oxygen or heart rate levels are too high or low. Some people complain that the sock falls off too easily which gives them scary false alarms from their base. We have yet to have one, but we also make sure the sock is really secure on Roman’s foot. The Smart Sock also allows us to check how well Roman is sleeping throughout the night, which is the feature we use the most.
There are two apps we use with our Owlet Smart Sock. The settings and current readings are all on the Owlet App. Tracking Roman’s daily oxygen, heart rate, and sleep levels over a period of time are on the Owlet Connected Care app. The Connected Care app you have to pay for…..it is $60/year or $7/month. Some people feel like it’s an unnecessary cost when you already have to pay $299 for the sock, but I feel having Roman’s heart rate, oxygen, and sleep trends over a month’s timespan make it worth it. Plus we are able to print those trends out and show them to our doctor if need be.
The Owlet Smart Sock 2 has definitely made me feel more comfortable putting Roman to bed in his own room. I think Brent loves it because he’s able to rest more soundly knowing we have a monitor on Roman. Though expensive, you truly can’t put a price on peace of mind, better sleep, and something that could potentially save your baby’s life.
